Emotions overflowed at Chennai International Airport on Wednesday as 364 Indians, stranded in the United Arab Emirates amidst escalating tensions in West Asia, landed safely on an Emirates Airlines flight from Dubai. This marked the second such arrival, reuniting passengers with anxious family members who had gathered to welcome them home.

With this latest arrival, a total of 581 passengers have now safely reached Chennai from Dubai, including 217 who landed on Tuesday. The scene was charged with emotion as relatives, some breaking down in tears upon spotting their loved ones exiting the arrival terminal, expressed immense relief. Many passengers, however, noted that the situation in Dubai was not as dire as feared, with daily life continuing cautiously despite the regional unrest.
Dharshini, a Chennai resident returning from Dubai, shared, "I felt safe where I was staying, though the sounds of explosions and defense aircraft flying past did create moments of panic." Another passenger, Peter, who had traveled to Dubai for a holiday with family, decided to cut the trip short due to the developments. "We were taken care of well at the airport," he remarked, highlighting the support received during the evacuation.
Passenger Experiences and Ongoing Flight Disruptions
Saravanakumar from Salem, who got stuck in Dubai while returning from the US, observed that the general public in the UAE remained largely unaffected by the regional tensions, carrying on with routine activities. Meanwhile, flight operations to and from key destinations like Dubai, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Bahrain remained suspended on Wednesday, causing further travel disruptions.
Etihad Airways announced cancellations of flights to Abu Dhabi for Thursday and Friday, though a flight from Chennai to Abu Dhabi on Wednesday proceeded, albeit without allowing passengers with connecting flights from Abu Dhabi. In a related development, IndiGo stated it had commenced limited operations to cities such as Athens, Muscat, Jeddah, and Madinah, along with select repatriation flights to the UAE. However, no repatriation flights were operated to Chennai until Thursday, underscoring the ongoing challenges in air travel amid the crisis.
