Bareilly Cafe Attack: 5 Held After Vigilantes Target Birthday Party Over 'Love Jihad' Claims
5 arrested for Bareilly cafe attack over 'love jihad' claims

Police in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly have arrested five individuals following a disturbing incident where a group of self-styled vigilantes violently disrupted a birthday celebration at a local cafe. The attack, which occurred on Saturday, December 27, 2025, was allegedly motivated by the presence of two Muslim youths at the party, with the assailants levelling accusations of 'love jihad'.

Chaos at the Celebration

The peaceful gathering turned into a scene of terror around 2 PM at the cafe owned by Shailendra Gangwar. According to the complaint, the celebration was underway when Rishabh Thakur and Deepak Pathak, accompanied by 20-25 unidentified persons, barged into the premises. The group allegedly began hurling abuses, assaulting the staff and customers, and issuing death threats. They also vandalised expensive items inside the restaurant, causing significant damage and financial loss.

In videos that later surfaced on social media, the girl celebrating her birthday stated that her party included around 12-13 friends, including the two Muslim youths. She alleged the attackers misbehaved with her, tried to snatch her phone, and specifically assaulted the two Muslim friends while making false allegations.

Police Action and Arrests

Upon receiving information, police from Prem Nagar police station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Circle Officer Ashutosh Shivam confirmed the prompt response. An FIR was registered against Rishabh Thakur, Deepak Pathak, and 25 unidentified associates under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including house trespass, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, mischief, and rioting.

While the main accused were initially absconding, five persons have since been arrested. In a controversial move, police also detained two birthday party attendees, Shaan and Waqaib, along with cafe owner Shailendra Gangwar, invoking provisions of breach of peace following a heated argument. All three were later released on bail on personal bonds.

Denials and Ongoing Investigation

The incident has taken a political turn with allegations that the main accused have links to the Bajrang Dal. However, the organisation's Bareilly coordinator, Aryan Chaudhary, denied any association with the individuals. Police officials, including SHO Rajbali Singh, stated that efforts are ongoing to trace the named accused and identify others involved by examining CCTV footage and viral videos.

Fortunately, no one sustained serious injuries requiring hospitalisation. The case highlights recurring tensions in the area, as it was alleged that Rishabh and Deepak are known cow vigilantes who have previously created disturbances over issues like 'love jihad'. The investigation continues as authorities work to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.
