Govt Railway Police Arrests 5 Suspected Drug Traffickers, Seizes 461g of Heroin in Guwahati Train Operations

In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Govt Railway Police (GRP) in Guwahati has arrested five suspected drug traffickers and seized a total of 461 grams of heroin from two separate train incidents. The operations, conducted over two days, underscore the intensified efforts by authorities to combat drug smuggling through railway networks in the Northeast region.

First Operation: Arrest of Three Traffickers on Poorvattar Sampark Kranti Express

According to GRP Officer-in-Charge Abhishek Bodo, the first incident occurred around 6:10 am on Tuesday during a routine security check at Guwahati Railway Station. The check targeted the Poorvattar Sampark Kranti Express, which was en route to Delhi, leading to the arrest of three individuals suspected of drug trafficking.

The arrested persons have been identified as Neha Devi (23), Jiya Singh Lucy (28), and Santosh Kumar (32), all hailing from Bihar. During the search, authorities recovered 10 packets of suspected heroin, with a total weight of 118 grams. This seizure highlights the ongoing challenges in intercepting illegal substances transported via long-distance trains.

Second Operation: Interception of Two Female Passengers on Sairang–Guwahati Express

In a related development, on Monday, a GRP team stationed at Jagiroad intercepted two female passengers traveling on the Sairang–Guwahati Express. The passengers were from Manipur’s Churachandpur district, and upon search, authorities discovered 30 packets of suspected heroin, weighing approximately 343 grams.

The duo was promptly arrested, bringing the total number of arrests to five and the cumulative heroin seizure to 461 grams. These operations demonstrate the GRP's proactive measures in monitoring train routes to prevent drug trafficking activities.

Implications and Regional Context

The arrests and seizures come amid growing concerns over drug trafficking in the Northeast, a region often used as a transit point for narcotics due to its strategic location. The GRP's actions reflect a broader commitment to enhancing railway security and curbing the flow of illegal drugs.

  • Increased vigilance at key railway stations like Guwahati and Jagiroad.
  • Collaboration with local and state authorities to track trafficking networks.
  • Focus on intercepting contraband before it reaches major urban centers like Delhi.

Officer Abhishek Bodo emphasized that such operations are part of ongoing efforts to maintain law and order, with further investigations underway to uncover potential links to larger drug syndicates. The GRP continues to urge public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities to bolster anti-narcotics initiatives.
