Veteran Bollywood actress Sonam Khan recently took to social media to share a charming and amusing anecdote from the very beginning of her cinematic career. She recalled the unforgettable experience of shooting her debut film, the 1988 movie 'Vijay', in the picturesque landscapes of Switzerland.
A Journey of Firsts: Travel, Snow, and a Childlike Wonder
In a detailed post on her official Instagram handle, Sonam Khan revealed that this trip marked her first ever journey outside India. The destination was Switzerland, a location famed in Bollywood for its romantic songs and stunning visuals. For the young actress, it was a world of new experiences.
"For the shoot of my first movie Vijay, it was the first time I had ever traveled outside India—and to Switzerland, no less!" she wrote. The excitement was palpable. One of the most memorable firsts was encountering snow. "I was so excited that when I saw snow for the first time, I actually ate some!" she confessed with delightful candor.
This innocent, childlike act did not go unnoticed. The legendary late filmmaker Yash Chopra, who was directing the song sequence, witnessed this moment. "Yash Chopra ji started laughing so much; he truly saw the kid in me," Sonam reminisced, highlighting the director's warm reaction to her genuine wonder.
The Luggage Debacle and an Improvised Costume Crisis
The trip, however, was not without its significant hiccups. Sonam Khan shared that she faced a major wardrobe disaster. "To make matters worse, I lost my luggage, which contained my costumes designed by the legendary Bhanu Athaiya," she described. The loss was devastating for the newcomer, leading her to "start crying like a baby because I had no clothes for the shoot of this song!!"
This logistical nightmare forced an impromptu shopping trip. "Consequently, I had to shop for all my clothes in Gstaad, where we were staying," she explained. The timing added another layer of challenge, as it was summertime in Switzerland. The local markets offered limited options suitable for a Bollywood song sequence.
"Since it was summertime, only 'teeny-tiny' clothes were available," Sonam noted. The solution was as unconventional as the problem. "So here I was actually wearing a swimming costume with a short skirt on the top of it!" This improvised outfit, a far cry from Bhanu Athaiya's original designs, became her costume for the song shoot.
Embracing Imperfection and Cherishing the Memory
Adding to the chaotic yet endearing nature of the experience, Sonam Khan admitted there was "no prep or rehearsal before we shot this song." She humorously added, "As you can tell, I definitely had two left feet when it came to dancing!" Despite the series of misfortunes—the lost luggage, the crying spell, the makeshift swimsuit costume, and her own confessed lack of dance preparation—Sonam Khan looks back on the episode with pure joy.
