Shopkeeper Arrested for Alleged Sexual Harassment of Minor

Police in Chennai have taken a 50-year-old shopkeeper into custody following serious allegations of sexual harassment against a young girl. The arrest, which took place on Tuesday, stems from an incident reported in the Madhavaram area, sending shockwaves through the local community.

The accused has been identified as Arockiaraj. He stands charged with sexually harassing a 13-year-old Class VII student. According to the official complaint, the reprehensible act occurred when the child visited his shop on December 10.

Details of the Disturbing Incident

Investigations reveal that the shopkeeper, Arockiaraj, allegedly lured the young girl by promising her gifts. Taking advantage of the situation, he then touched her inappropriately. Traumatized by the event, the girl initially confided in one of her friends, pleading with her to keep the matter a secret.

However, the situation took a more alarming turn when the accused reportedly attempted to harass the child again. This repeated misconduct compelled the friend who knew the secret to break her promise. She immediately informed the victim's parents about the horrific ordeal.

Police Action and Judicial Custody

Upon learning the truth, the girl's family wasted no time in seeking justice. They formally lodged a complaint at the Puzhal All-Women Police Station, which promptly registered a case and initiated an investigation.

The police acted swiftly on the complaint. Arockiaraj was arrested on Tuesday and subsequently produced before a court. The court has ordered that he be remanded in judicial custody as the legal proceedings move forward. This case highlights the critical importance of children feeling safe to report abuse and the role of alert friends and responsible parenting in bringing perpetrators to book.
