Delhi Police Expand Arrests in Uttam Nagar Murder Case Following Holi Clash
In a significant development in the investigation of the murder of 26-year-old Tarun Khatik, Delhi Police have made seven additional arrests and apprehended another minor. This brings the total number of individuals arrested in the case to 14, with two minors now detained. The incident occurred in southwest Delhi's Uttam Nagar area during the night of Holi on March 4.
Latest Arrests and Details of the Accused
The latest individuals taken into custody include Sayra alias Kali (40), Sarifan (50), Salma (36), Suhail alias Sahil (21), Sameer Chauhan (20), Firoj (22), and Ismail (50), all residents of Uttam Nagar. Additionally, a 14-year-old minor was apprehended in connection with the case. Police sources indicate that Sayra was the woman on whom a coloured water balloon fell during the Holi celebrations, which allegedly sparked the confrontation.
Background of the Dispute and Previous Arrests
According to investigators, the dispute began when coloured water from a balloon thrown by a girl from Tarun's family accidentally splashed onto Sayra from the neighbouring family. This triggered an argument that quickly escalated into a violent clash, resulting in Tarun's death. The two families had been neighbours for nearly five decades and had previous disputes over issues such as parking and garbage disposal.
Earlier, police had arrested several other accused, including Imran alias Bunty (38), Umardeen (49), Jummadeen (36), Kamruddin (36), Mustaque (46), Muzzafar (25), and Tahir (18), while another juvenile had been apprehended. Officials have invoked stringent provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act after recording statements from the victim's family.
Family Demands and Municipal Action
Tarun's brother has demanded strict action against those involved, stating, "Such criminals must be encountered. They killed my brother and should face the same fate. We are not satisfied with the bulldozer action." In response, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi carried out a demolition drive in the locality on Sunday, removing illegal portions of a house linked to one of the accused. Civic authorities said the action targeted unauthorised structures allegedly built over drains that obstruct water flow ahead of the monsoon.
Police Deployment and Current Situation
Heavy police and paramilitary deployment remained in place during the demolition drive to maintain law and order. The incident had earlier triggered tension in the locality, with protesters damaging several vehicles and setting some on fire, prompting the deployment of additional police and central forces. Authorities have stated that the situation is now under control and strict vigil is being maintained to prevent any breach of peace.
