Coimbatore Police Crack Down on Shocking Elderly Murder Case in Pollachi
In a disturbing incident that has rattled the community, the Coimbatore district police have made a significant arrest in connection with the murder of a 77-year-old woman. The accused, identified as 75-year-old N Saroja from Anbu Nagar in Pollachi, was taken into custody on Thursday following an intensive investigation.
Discovery of the Crime Scene
The tragic discovery unfolded on February 21 when the victim's son, Namachivayam, visited his mother's residence in Anbu Nagar. Finding the front door locked from the inside, he peered through a window and spotted his mother, R Visalatchi, lying motionless on a cot. Forced entry revealed the grim reality: Visalatchi was deceased, and her valuable gold ornaments were conspicuously absent from the premises.
Namachivayam promptly filed an official complaint with the Pollachi West police station, setting in motion a comprehensive criminal investigation.
Meticulous Police Investigation Unravels the Truth
Law enforcement authorities registered a formal case and assembled a specialized team to pursue all leads. The crime scene underwent rigorous examination by fingerprint experts, forensic specialists, and a sniffer dog squad. Investigators collected crucial evidence, including cigarette butts, beedi pieces, and an empty liquor bottle found within the house.
The investigation expanded dramatically as police scrutinized more than 70 call detail records and reviewed footage from over 50 CCTV cameras installed throughout the locality. This painstaking digital analysis eventually pointed investigators toward Saroja, who was known to have visited the victim's home prior to the incident.
Interrogation and Confession Reveal Premeditated Crime
When brought in for questioning, Saroja provided inconsistent statements that raised immediate suspicion among investigators. A subsequent search of her residence yielded the missing gold ornaments, directly linking her to the crime.
During intensive interrogation, Saroja confessed to the murder. According to police reports, she was aware that Visalatchi had been living alone following the death of her younger son. This knowledge prompted Saroja to formulate a plan to steal the elderly woman's jewelry for financial gain.
In a calculated attempt to mislead authorities, Saroja had collected cigarette and beedi stubs along with an empty liquor bottle from nearby locations and strategically placed them at the crime scene. On the fateful day, she confronted Visalatchi at her home, demanding the jewelry. When the victim refused, Saroja assaulted her, ultimately murdering her by forcefully hitting her head against a wall before fleeing with approximately 8.5 sovereigns of gold.
Legal Proceedings and Police Recognition
Saroja has been remanded to judicial custody as legal proceedings advance. Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police K Karthikeyan publicly commended the investigative team for their dedicated efforts. Special recognition was extended to Pollachi Deputy Superintendent of Police Naveen Kumar, Inspector Chandramohan, Sub-Inspectors Pandiarajan, Stephen, Anandkumar, and the entire police team involved in the successful resolution of this case.
