A tragic incident has shaken Poonthandalam village near Kalpakkam in Chengalpet district, where a 94-year-old woman lost her life after being assaulted by her grandson in an inebriated state. The deceased has been identified as P Saroja, a resident of the village who lived with her son Munusamy and his family.

Details of the Incident

According to police reports, the incident occurred when Saroja was resting on a cot outside her house. Due to her advanced age, she often spoke to herself. Her grandson, M. Rajesh, 26, returned home in a heavily intoxicated condition and became irritated by her talking. An argument ensued, during which Rajesh slapped and assaulted Saroja repeatedly, causing her to collapse unconscious on the spot.

Discovery and Aftermath

The incident came to light when Saroja's younger son, Raji, found her lying unconscious and immediately alerted relatives. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. The Sadras police were informed and promptly arrived at the scene. They arrested Rajesh on the spot and initiated further investigation. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and legal proceedings are underway.
