Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee appeared before the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday in connection with an FIR lodged against him over his alleged inflammatory statements. The FIR was registered exactly a month ago, following a complaint filed by social activist Rajib Sarkar.
Background of the Case
The complaint, filed on May 16, 2026, accused Banerjee of making provocative speeches that could incite public unrest. The CID summoned Banerjee for questioning after preliminary investigations found sufficient grounds to proceed. Banerjee arrived at the CID office in Kolkata around 10:30 AM accompanied by his legal team.
Allegations and Legal Proceedings
According to sources, the alleged inflammatory statements were made during a public rally in April 2026. Rajib Sarkar, the complainant, claimed that Banerjee's remarks violated the law and posed a threat to public order. The CID has been examining video recordings and transcripts of the speeches to ascertain the exact nature of the comments.
Banerjee, who is also the national general secretary of the TMC, has denied the allegations, stating that his statements were taken out of context. He has cooperated with the investigation and provided his version of events during the questioning session, which lasted for over three hours.
Political Reactions
The development has sparked reactions from political circles. TMC leaders have rallied behind Banerjee, calling the case a politically motivated move by the opposition. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has welcomed the CID action, demanding a thorough investigation into the matter.
This is not the first time Banerjee has faced legal scrutiny. In 2024, he was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate in a separate case related to alleged irregularities in the recruitment of teachers in West Bengal.
Next Steps
The CID is expected to submit a report to the court based on the evidence collected. Banerjee has been asked to appear again if required. The case is likely to be heard in the Alipore court next week.
The incident highlights the ongoing political tensions in West Bengal, where the ruling TMC and opposition parties have been locked in a war of words over various issues. The outcome of this case could have implications for the political landscape in the state.
