Anti-Corruption Bureau Nabs Police Constable in Bribery Sting Operation in Nashik
In a significant crackdown on corruption within law enforcement, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) executed a successful operation on Wednesday, resulting in the arrest of a police constable stationed at the Tofkhana police station in Ahilyanagar. The arrest was made as the constable was caught red-handed accepting a bribe amounting to Rs 35,000 from a complainant involved in a domestic violence case.
Details of the Bribery Demand and Investigation
According to official statements from the ACB, the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute between the complainant and his wife, which led to the registration of a domestic violence case at the Tofkhana police station. The constable in question was assigned to investigate this sensitive matter. On April 11, the constable contacted the complainant via mobile phone, summoning him to the police station for what was purported to be a routine inquiry.
During this interaction, the constable allegedly made an illicit demand, informing the complainant that he would need to pay Rs 50,000 if he wished to avoid frequent summons to the police station throughout the investigation process. This demand was explicitly linked to sparing the complainant and his family from repeated harassment and disruptions. After some negotiation, the constable reportedly agreed to reduce the amount to Rs 35,000, setting the stage for the subsequent trap.
ACB's Swift Action and Legal Proceedings
Faced with this extortionate demand, the complainant took a courageous step by approaching the Anti-Corruption Bureau to file a formal complaint. The ACB, acting promptly on the information, devised and implemented a meticulous trap to apprehend the constable. The operation culminated in the constable's arrest at the very moment he was accepting the agreed-upon bribe of Rs 35,000, thereby providing concrete evidence of the corruption.
Following the arrest, the ACB has registered a case against the constable under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. This legal action underscores the bureau's commitment to rooting out corruption within public institutions and ensuring accountability among law enforcement personnel. The case is now under further investigation, with authorities emphasizing the importance of such measures in maintaining public trust and integrity in the police force.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges in combating corruption at the grassroots level of policing, particularly in cases involving vulnerable individuals. It serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilant oversight and robust anti-corruption mechanisms to protect citizens from exploitation.
