Mumbai: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) city unit apprehended a private individual late Tuesday for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe on behalf of a police constable in connection with passport verification work. The accused, Sanjit Kumar, was caught red-handed after collecting Rs 1,000 for police constable Basavaraj Gwaminath Dhamgunde, who is attached to the Khar police station. Both Kumar and Dhamgunde have been charged under Sections 7 and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
Details of the Case
The complainant had applied for processing his daughter's passport. Initially, the constable demanded Rs 2,000 as a bribe. After negotiations, the amount was reduced to Rs 1,000. Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the ACB office at Worli. During verification conducted in the presence of panch witnesses, the allegations were confirmed.
Trap Operation
In the subsequent trap operation, Dhamgunde allegedly instructed the complainant to place the bribe amount in a cupboard near a vehicle parked nearby. Acting on his directions, Sanjit Kumar allegedly collected and kept the money, following which he was caught red-handed by the ACB team.
The ACB continues to investigate the matter, and further legal proceedings are underway.
