Acid Attack in Ludhiana Linked to Social Media Dispute
A shocking acid attack in Ludhiana has left a 32-year-old woman severely injured, with police alleging the assault was carried out by her former live-in partner who was angered by her presence on social media. The accused, identified as 35-year-old Paan Singh, a mason from Baltana village in Zirakpur, was arrested after the incident on Monday.
Details of the Attack and Relationship
According to investigators, Singh flung acid at the woman's face outside her residence in Guru Gyan Vihar, Ludhiana. He reportedly called her outside before attacking her and made a threatening remark, saying, "Now you will not be able to do anything." The victim was rushed to Ludhiana Civil Hospital and later referred to PGI, Chandigarh, for specialized treatment.
Police revealed that Singh and the victim, both married to different people living in their respective hometowns, had been in a live-in relationship in Zirakpur for several months. Both worked in the construction sector, with Singh as a mason and the woman as a laborer. Their relationship began to deteriorate when the woman started creating and posting Instagram reels, which Singh objected to repeatedly.
Escalating Tensions and Police Inaction
Sources indicate that disagreements grew over time, leading the woman to leave Singh's residence about one and a half months ago and move to Ludhiana to live with her sister. Singh had previously traveled to Ludhiana to meet her, but the encounters ended in arguments. It is suspected that he doubted her fidelity.
The victim's sister, Laajwati, alleged that Singh had been posting derogatory and objectionable content about both of them on social media. They filed a complaint with the police, who called Singh for questioning, but he did not appear. Laajwati claimed the police did not pursue the complaint further, leaving them vulnerable.
Investigation Findings and Motive
Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP-II) Karanveer Singh stated that the investigation revealed Singh had posted several derogatory Instagram posts about the woman before the assault. Police suspect the attack was deliberately intended to disfigure her because he disliked her posting videos on social media platforms.
On the day of the attack, Singh allegedly arrived in Ludhiana on a motorcycle, carrying a bottle of acid. A case has been registered at Dugri police station, and further investigation is underway to uncover all aspects of this horrific crime.
