Advocate Brutally Attacked for Exposing Illegal Sand Mining in Shivamogga

A shocking incident unfolded in Shivamogga district where an advocate faced a violent attack for reporting illegal sand transportation. The advocate, identified as Sharath from Chandalli village in Hosanagara Taluk, became the target of a brutal assault after he alerted authorities about sand smuggling activities.

Violent Attack During Village Fair

The attack occurred on Thursday evening at Korlikoppa village in Anandapura, Sagar Taluk. Sharath was attending a village fair when the incident took place. According to police reports, the advocate had earlier called the 112 emergency helpline to report illegal sand smuggling near the Eshwara Temple in Korlikoppa village.

This action apparently angered a group involved in the illegal sand trade. Police stated that eight individuals formed a gang with the clear intention to murder the advocate. They chased Sharath using two cars and two motorbikes, deliberately ramming his vehicle and damaging it by pelting stones.

Narrow Escape from Kidnapping Attempt

When Sharath got out of his damaged car, the attackers brutally assaulted him. They struck his head repeatedly in what police described as an attempt to murder him. Miraculously, the advocate managed to escape what could have been a fatal attack.

The situation escalated further when the accused forcibly tried to push Sharath into their vehicle, attempting to abduct him. During this terrifying ordeal, they verbally abused him and issued explicit death threats. The complaint filed with police reveals that the attackers warned Sharath against complaining to authorities, threatening to file false SC/ST cases against him if he pursued legal action.

Police Response and Arrests

Following the registration of a case at Anandapura police station, a team led by PSI Praveen launched an immediate operation. Their swift action resulted in the arrest of four suspects connected to the attack.

Shivamogga Superintendent of Police B Nikhil addressed reporters about the case. He confirmed that the four arrested suspects have been produced before a court. The SP stated that both Anandapura and Ripponpet police stations are actively investigating the matter to uncover all details of the attack and the illegal sand transportation network.

This incident highlights the dangerous consequences faced by those who attempt to expose illegal activities in the region. The attack on an advocate, whose profession involves upholding the law, has raised serious concerns about law enforcement and protection for whistleblowers in Shivamogga district.
