Agartala: Two police personnel, detained earlier along with three others in connection with a Rs 50-crore financial fraud, have been sent to seven-day police custody by a local court. All five were picked up for questioning after a cash display video went viral three days ago.

Identities of the Accused

The detained police personnel have been identified as Menaka Debbarma, a female constable serving at East Agartala Women's Police Station, and Ajit Debbarma, a rifleman belonging to the TSR 14th Battalion. The other three detained individuals include Sanchana Debbarma, an employee of the state health department, constable Pijush Debbarma, and his wife Nandarani Debbarma, also a constable.

Viral Video Triggers Investigation

In the viral video, Nandarani was seen showcasing bundles of cash to Sanchana at their home, which raised significant public curiosity. Following the video's circulation, the Director General of Police tasked DIG Northern Range, Rati Ranjan Debnath, to initiate an inquiry. During interrogation, police identified Sanchana Debbarma as a crucial figure in the case and detained her for questioning.

Police Custody and Investigation

The court granted seven-day police custody for all five accused. SDPO Nirupan Dutta stated, “We cannot share any additional information about the case until our investigation concludes. Our primary objective is to get to the root of the crime and recover the funds as soon as possible.”

The financial fraud, amounting to Rs 50 crore, came to light after the viral video prompted police action. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities focusing on tracing the source of the cash and identifying any other individuals involved.
