Agra Mother Arrested for Alleged Murder of 2-Year-Old Daughter Found in Drain
A shocking case of alleged filicide has emerged in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, where a 35-year-old woman was arrested on Thursday for the suspected murder of her own two-year-old daughter. The toddler's body was discovered in a drain near the Yamuna riverbank in the Chatta area of Agra district on Tuesday evening, sparking a swift police investigation that led to the mother's apprehension.
CCTV Footage Provides Crucial Evidence
Chatta Station House Officer (SHO) Ankur Malik revealed that police zeroed in on the parents after meticulously scanning CCTV footage from the vicinity. The footage allegedly shows the toddler's mother, identified as Mamta, leaving their residence in the Dhakran area with the young child. Crucially, she is seen returning alone after a period of time, raising immediate suspicions.
"After sending the body for postmortem, we began a thorough scan of CCTV footage in the area and were able to identify the girl and trace the movements," SHO Malik stated. A murder case has been formally registered against Mamta based on this evidence and initial findings.
Domestic Dispute Cited as Possible Motive
Preliminary investigations suggest the alleged crime stemmed from a domestic dispute. Prima facie evidence indicates that Mamta, described by police as short-tempered, might have killed her daughter in a fit of anger following an argument with her husband, Ramu Dhakad.
"Mamta is short-tempered and might have killed her child in anger. No one else's involvement has been found in the case so far," SHO Malik explained, detailing the current theory behind the tragic incident.
Background of the Accused and Legal Proceedings
The couple's background adds another layer to the case. Mamta is reportedly a native of Bihar, while her husband Ramu Dhakad is a local resident of Agra. They had been married for approximately three years prior to this incident.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Sheshmani Upadhyay confirmed the arrest and assured that further legal proceedings are actively underway. The investigation continues to determine the full circumstances surrounding the toddler's death.
Discovery of the Body and Initial Response
The case came to light on Tuesday evening when passersby near the Yamuna Aarti site spotted the toddler's body lying in a drain. They promptly alerted the local police, who responded immediately to secure the scene and initiate the investigation that ultimately led to the mother's arrest.
