Ahmedabad: Man Dies, Woman Injured in Apparent Suicide Pact Over Clan Opposition
Ahmedabad: Couple's Suicide Attempt Over Marriage Opposition

A tragic incident unfolded near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad on Wednesday morning, where a young man was found dead and a woman was discovered unconscious with injuries in a hotel room. The couple, both 25 and residents of Shela, are believed to have attempted suicide after facing fierce opposition from their families to their marriage plans because they belong to the same clan.

Sequence of Events at Bhat Village Hotel

According to Inspector N D Nakum of the Airport police station, the couple, identified as Rama Bharwad and a 25-year-old woman, left their homes in Shela and checked into a hotel near Bhat Circle on Tuesday morning. They were scheduled to check out on Wednesday around 11:30 am.

When the pair did not emerge from their room by late morning, hotel staff grew concerned. After repeated knocks went unanswered, they alerted the police. Officers arrived at the scene and used a master key to open the door.

"Inside, the man and the woman were found lying on the bed with their wrists slit. There was blood on the bed," Inspector Nakum stated. An emergency ambulance was summoned immediately. Medical personnel pronounced Rama Bharwad dead at the spot, while the young woman was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment, where she remains under medical care.

Familial Opposition and Police Investigation

Preliminary police inquiries revealed that the two had been in a relationship for some time. Their desire to marry, however, was met with resistance from their families. The primary reason for the opposition was that both individuals belong to the same clan (gotra), a significant social barrier in their community.

"Based on initial findings, it appears that both attempted suicide by cutting their wrists," Inspector Nakum explained. Police have registered a case of accidental death and are conducting a detailed investigation. Statements from hotel staff are being recorded, and CCTV footage from the hotel premises is being scrutinized to piece together the exact sequence of events.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings and Autopsy

Rama Bharwad's body has been sent for a postmortem examination to determine the precise cause of death. No suicide note was found in the hotel room, adding complexity to the investigation. Police are working to verify all circumstances leading up to the tragic incident.

"Once the woman regains consciousness, her statement will be recorded, and further legal proceedings will be initiated," Inspector Nakum added. The investigation remains active as authorities seek to understand the full context of this heartbreaking event that highlights the severe pressures of social norms on young couples.
