Ahmedabad Designates Exclusive NIA Court to Accelerate Terror Case Trials
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has taken a significant step to enhance judicial efficiency by designating a special court in Ahmedabad exclusively for cases investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). This move, announced through a notification on Tuesday, March 17, aims to streamline the trial process for sensitive national security matters in Gujarat.
Court Notification and Jurisdiction Details
As per the official notification, the court of the additional principal judge at the Ahmedabad City Civil Court has been officially notified as a special NIA court under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008. This court will have the exclusive authority to try scheduled offences probed by the NIA, with jurisdiction extending across the entire state of Gujarat. The designation is expected to centralize and expedite legal proceedings related to terrorism and organized crime.
Supreme Court Directives Driving the Initiative
This development follows recent directives from the Supreme Court of India, which in February issued notices to 17 states, including Gujarat, urging them to establish exclusive courts where at least 10 NIA cases are pending. The apex court highlighted concerns over delays in the disposal of terror-related cases and emphasized the necessity for dedicated judicial infrastructure to address these issues promptly.
Current Status of Exclusive NIA Courts in India
As of February 2026, while the NIA has designated over 50 special courts nationwide, only a few function as exclusive courts dedicated solely to NIA cases. Based on recent Supreme Court proceedings and reports from the home ministry, only three such exclusive courts were operational prior to this announcement:
- Ranchi
- Jammu
- Mumbai
In January 2026, Bihar also designated an exclusive NIA court in Patna, indicating a gradual shift towards specialized judicial mechanisms across the country. Officials believe that the establishment of the Ahmedabad court will significantly reduce case pendency and ensure faster trials in sensitive matters, such as the al-Qaida Gujarat terror conspiracy case, which has faced judicial scrutiny due to delays.
Financial Support and Future Implications
The Central government has assured financial backing for these specialized courts. The Ministry of Home Affairs will provide a one-time grant of Rs 1 crore for infrastructure development and an annual grant of Rs 1 crore for recurring expenses. This support is crucial for maintaining the operational efficiency of the court and ensuring it can handle complex cases without resource constraints.
