Ahmedabad Doctor Files Domestic Violence Complaint Against Husband and In-Laws

A 29-year-old doctor in Ahmedabad has lodged a serious domestic violence complaint with the Vejalpur police, targeting her husband, a Class-I officer in the roads and buildings department in Gandhinagar, along with his family members. The complaint includes her father-in-law, who serves in the city police force, highlighting a complex family dynamic.

Allegations of Sustained Harassment and Assault

The complainant, employed at an urban health centre, detailed in her statement recorded on Tuesday that she has endured persistent mental and physical harassment since her marriage in 2023. She named her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law as the accused persons in the FIR.

According to the complaint, disputes arose early in the marriage over personal issues and alleged inappropriate chats discovered on her husband's phone. The situation escalated when the doctor alleged that her husband misled her about his whereabouts. He claimed to be traveling to Saurashtra for bridge inspection training on January 29, but she later found evidence suggesting he had gone abroad. Upon confronting her in-laws and visiting his Gandhinagar office, she learned he was on a 15-day leave and had traveled to Pattaya in Thailand.

Pressure for IVF and Physical Violence

Further distressing allegations involve medical pressure. Despite medical reports indicating her husband was not capable of fathering a child, the doctor claimed she was repeatedly pressured by her in-laws to undergo IVF procedures starting from February 2024. She stated she underwent the procedure three times, experiencing severe physical discomfort, yet faced taunts for not conceiving.

The complaint also describes a violent incident on February 5. After returning home from duty, the doctor alleged she was assaulted by her husband and in-laws. She detailed that her mother-in-law pulled her hair, her brother-in-law hit her with a stick, and her husband kicked her. She was dragged out of her room, and her phone was taken away. Following this, she sought help from a neighbor and contacted her father, leading to intervention by the 181 Abhayam helpline and police.

Police Action and Case Registration

The Vejalpur police have registered a domestic violence case based on the complaint. This incident underscores ongoing issues of domestic abuse and the challenges faced by victims in seeking justice, particularly in high-profile family settings.
