Ahmedabad Exotic Animal Trade Continues Despite Police Crackdown
Weeks after the Ahmedabad city crime branch dismantled an illegal racket involving the breeding and sale of exotic animals, investigators now believe the clandestine trade has not ceased. Officials strongly suspect that several individuals are actively selling rare and protected species through covert social media platforms and exclusive private networks.
Network Larger Than Initially Detected
Police sources indicate the network could be significantly more extensive than first uncovered. The animals are allegedly being supplied to affluent buyers who maintain them at secluded farmhouses or properties located outside the city limits. This sophisticated operation appears to cater to a niche market of wealthy individuals seeking exotic pets.
Sources within the crime branch revealed that multiple individuals are purportedly offering exotic animals to high-net-worth clients through closed social media groups and direct, discreet contacts. Investigators have identified some suspected sellers, including an individual recently arrested from Navrangpura in a related earlier case. Another is believed to be operating from the Vastrapur area, while two more suspected sellers have been traced to Zundal.
Exotic Animals as Status Symbols
A senior crime branch officer disclosed that investigators have pinpointed multiple farmhouses in and around Ahmedabad where exotic animals such as hamsters, red-handed tamarins, and mini lop rabbits are being illegally housed. "These animals are often displayed during private gatherings or exclusive parties as a symbol of status and wealth," the officer stated.
He elaborated that while wealthy owners traditionally preferred keeping hounds or horses, the trend in recent years has shifted dramatically toward acquiring rare foreign species. This shift underscores a growing demand for unique and exotic pets among the city's elite.
Regulatory Violations and Health Risks
Authorities have also uncovered that many of these owners are blatantly ignoring mandatory procedures for keeping exotic animals. Under existing regulations, individuals possessing exotic species must formally declare them to the forest department, maintain comprehensive medical records, and adhere to strict biosecurity guidelines to prevent the transmission of diseases.
The failure to comply with these protocols poses significant public health risks and threatens local ecosystems. Investigators noted that the price for such animals ranges from approximately Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, depending on the species and its rarity.
Ongoing Investigations and Interagency Cooperation
Meanwhile, the crime branch has initiated a thorough examination of possible supply routes through which these exotic animals are reaching Ahmedabad. Officials confirmed that the matter has been formally referred to the Customs department, which is expected to investigate potential illegal imports or exports connected to the racket. A formal complaint from Customs is still awaited, indicating the complexity of the interagency probe.
This investigation intriguingly overlaps with another ongoing probe in which authorities are examining allegations that snake venom was being supplied for use at rave parties in the city. Officials emphasized that inquiries into both aspects are actively progressing, suggesting a broader network of illicit activities.
The persistence of the exotic animal trade highlights the challenges law enforcement faces in curbing such underground markets. As the investigation deepens, authorities remain vigilant, aiming to dismantle the network completely and enforce wildlife protection laws.
