In a major crackdown ahead of the New Year festivities, the Ahmedabad city crime branch and Special Operations Group (SOG) have launched an intensified drive against narcotics, resulting in multiple arrests and significant seizures. The coordinated police action on Sunday led to the apprehension of four alleged drug peddlers from different areas of the city and the confiscation of mephedrone drugs with an estimated street value of Rs 8.4 lakh.
Ramol RTO Road Raid Nets Major Haul
Acting on a specific tip-off, SOG officials targeted a suspect allegedly selling mephedrone, commonly known as MD, on the Ramol RTO road. A police team swiftly reached the location and detained the individual. A subsequent search led to the recovery of mephedrone worth Rs 3.82 lakh. During interrogation, the arrested man reportedly disclosed that he sourced the contraband from a Rajasthan-native resident of Ramol and sold it on a commission basis. The police also seized a vehicle and a mobile phone from his possession, bringing the total value of seized items from this operation to Rs 5.3 lakh.
Vatva Shanty and Jamalpur Operations
In a parallel operation conducted by the crime branch, two men were arrested from a shanty located in the Vatva industrial area. Officers seized drugs valued at Rs 2.6 lakh from the accused. Notably, the police also recovered a weighing scale, which the suspects allegedly used to measure and sell drugs in small quantities as per customer demand.
In yet another action in the Jamalpur area, the crime branch intercepted a consignment of ganja (marijuana). The narcotics, worth approximately Rs 2 lakh, were discovered hidden in a two-wheeler. While one suspect was apprehended, another managed to escape by jumping off the vehicle and fleeing the scene.
Heightened Vigilance for New Year Celebrations
The series of raids underscore a clear strategy by Ahmedabad police to clamp down on the drug supply chain in the city as the year-end celebration period approaches. Law enforcement agencies are focusing on intelligence-based operations to disrupt peddling networks and prevent the distribution of narcotics during the festive season. The arrests and seizures send a strong message about zero tolerance towards drug trafficking activities in Gujarat's major metropolis.
