Ahmedabad Police Uncover Liquor Smuggling Operation in Footwear Shipment
In a significant crackdown on illicit activities, the Prevention of Crime Branch (PCB) in Ahmedabad has seized liquor valued at approximately Rs 1.9 lakh that was cleverly concealed within cartons labelled as footwear. The operation, which unfolded near Prem Darwaza, has exposed a sophisticated smuggling attempt utilizing transport consignments to disguise illegal goods.
Late-Night Raid Based on Tip-Off
Acting on a credible tip-off received in the early hours of Sunday, a dedicated PCB team swiftly moved into action around 2 AM. Their investigation led them to a transport godown situated near the Gujarat Ginning Mill area. Upon arrival, officers discovered multiple cartons stacked outside the premises, all prominently marked as containing footwear.
An initial inspection revealed that most of these boxes were indeed filled with ladies' slippers, aligning with their labels. However, a more thorough examination uncovered a deceptive layer within one particular carton. Hidden between plastic packets of footwear, police found smaller boxes that had been carefully concealed.
Discovery of Concealed Liquor and Broken Bottles
These hidden compartments contained sealed bottles of liquor, with some unfortunately broken during the smuggling process, likely due to improper handling or transportation. The total haul amounted to 32 bottles of liquor and 90 pairs of slippers, highlighting the scale of this illicit operation.
Police detained a labourer present at the godown, who was responsible for unloading goods that arrived during nighttime hours. During questioning, the labourer claimed ignorance regarding the true contents of the cartons, stating he was unaware of the concealed liquor.
Police Surveillance and Investigation Details
Following the detention, officers maintained a discreet watch at the location in hopes of identifying individuals who would come to collect the consignment. Despite their vigilance, no one appeared to claim the shipment, suggesting the smugglers may have been alerted or abandoned the operation.
Documents recovered from the cartons provided crucial leads, indicating that the shipment originated from a Delhi-based firm and was destined for a local footwear trader in Ahmedabad. This discovery has prompted police to suspect that the liquor was being transported illegally under the guise of legitimate commercial goods to evade detection by authorities.
Legal Action and Ongoing Probe
A formal complaint has been lodged with the Madhavpura police station, and a case has been registered in connection with this smuggling attempt. The investigation is now focused on tracing the origins of the liquor, identifying all parties involved in the scheme, and understanding the full extent of this network.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating smuggling activities that exploit legitimate trade routes. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on such illegal practices and ensuring compliance with state regulations.
