Ahmedabad Police Seize Rs 8 Crore Hybrid Cannabis, Arrest Siblings in Thailand-Linked Drug Bust
In a major crackdown on interstate drug trafficking, the Ahmedabad city police's Special Operations Group (SOG) seized 22.78 kilograms of hybrid cannabis valued at approximately Rs 7.97 crore near Noble Nagar on Wednesday evening. The operation led to the arrest of a brother-sister duo allegedly connected to a sophisticated drug network with international links to Thailand.
Massive Seizure and Arrest Details
Acting on specific intelligence, the SOG team intercepted a car near Prem Prakash Ashram on the Chiloda-Airport stretch around 4:30 PM. The vehicle was thoroughly searched in the presence of independent witnesses, revealing three cloth bags on the rear seat containing 26 sealed packets of suspected contraband. Upon inspection, officers discovered a greenish-brown plant-based substance with a distinct odor.
A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) officer conducted a preliminary test at the SOG office, confirming that the substance appeared to be hybrid cannabis. The entire contraband was weighed on a digital scale, totaling 22.78 kilograms. The total value of the seized items, including the car and mobile phones, was estimated at Rs 8.01 crore, as per a complaint filed with the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB).
Arrested Accused and International Connections
The arrested individuals were identified as Chetan Prajapati, 28, a native of Rajsamand district in Rajasthan, and his sister, Jiya Prajapati, 34, originally from Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, and currently residing in Ahmedabad. Police recovered three mobile phones, an Indian passport in Jiya's name, and the car used for transportation.
During interrogation, Jiya allegedly disclosed that she traveled to Bangkok in November 2025, where she made contact with two individuals who later tasked her with arranging carriers to bring hybrid cannabis into India. In January 2026, four men from Rajasthan were allegedly sent to Bangkok to collect the consignment. One of them was apprehended at Mumbai airport with a bag of contraband and is currently incarcerated, while the remaining three allegedly delivered the stock to the siblings in Gujarat.
Investigation and Legal Actions
Police stated that the seized stock was intended for sale within Ahmedabad. The DCB has registered an offence under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for possession, trafficking, and criminal conspiracy. Authorities are actively investigating to trace other members of the network, verifying travel records, and examining digital evidence to uncover the foreign supply chain.
Understanding Hybrid Cannabis
Hybrid cannabis is a modified strain of marijuana cultivated to enhance potency, often containing higher levels of psychoactive compounds compared to traditional variants. It commands a premium price in the illegal market. Police sources noted that the seized 22.78kg consignment was valued at Rs 7.97 crore based on prevailing black-market rates. The packaging in sealed plastic parcels indicated organized trafficking, with such consignments typically broken into smaller quantities for distribution to local peddlers before reaching end users in urban areas.
