Ahmedabad Senior Citizen Defrauded of Rs 1.8 Lakh in Sophisticated ATM Card Swap Scam
In a distressing incident highlighting the vulnerability of elderly citizens to financial crimes, a 66-year-old man from Isanpur in Ahmedabad has been allegedly cheated of Rs 1.8 lakh through a debit card swap fraud at an ATM kiosk. The fraud, which occurred between March 21 and March 23, has prompted police action and raised concerns about ATM security.
Details of the Deceptive ATM Encounter
According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed with the Isanpur police, the victim visited an ATM located near a temple in the Govindwadi area to withdraw cash. Inside the ATM cabin, an unidentified man initiated a conversation with him, creating a distraction under the guise of being helpful or friendly.
During this interaction, the accused swapped the victim's debit card with another card without his knowledge. Furthermore, the fraudster managed to observe the victim's Personal Identification Number (PIN) as he entered it, gaining complete access to the bank account.
Unauthorized Transactions and Financial Loss
Subsequently, the perpetrator executed multiple unauthorized transactions. A total of Rs 1.1 lakh was withdrawn from the victim's account through various ATM transactions. Additionally, Rs 70,000 was spent on purchasing gold, indicating the fraudster's intent to quickly monetize the stolen funds through high-value purchases.
The fraud only came to light when the victim later checked his bank statement or received notifications and noticed the suspicious transactions that he did not authorize.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
The Isanpur police have registered a formal case of cheating based on the victim's complaint. Authorities are actively investigating the matter, with a key focus on scanning CCTV footage from the ATM and surrounding areas to identify the accused individual.
This incident underscores the importance of vigilance at ATM kiosks, especially for senior citizens who may be targeted by criminals employing social engineering tactics. Police have advised the public to be cautious of strangers in ATM cabins and to shield their PIN entries carefully.
