Ahmedabad Trader Attempts Suicide After Eviction Pressure, Files Police Complaint
A 28-year-old trader in Ahmedabad allegedly consumed a phenyl-like liquid from his shop after facing mounting pressure to vacate his rented premises. A formal complaint has been registered with the Sarkhej police on Friday, detailing a disturbing sequence of events that culminated in the desperate act.
Background of the Trader and Shop
The trader, who has been living alone in the Makarba area for approximately two-and-a-half years, operated his business from a rented shop in the same locality. According to the police complaint, the dispute began on March 10 around 8 pm when two individuals visited his shop and demanded that he move tables kept outside the premises.
Escalation of the Conflict
The trader refused the demand, arguing that other shops also had tables outside and theirs should be addressed first. This refusal quickly turned the situation hostile. The two men allegedly grew aggressive, called the society chairman, and had the water supply to the shop disconnected. When the trader objected, the men hurled abuses, leading to a physical scuffle that required intervention from locals.
One of the accused allegedly issued a chilling threat before departing: "Along with this table, I will burn you too." This incident marked the beginning of a sustained period of harassment.
Eviction Notice and Desperate Act
The pressure intensified on March 30 when society office-bearers served an eviction notice to the shop owner, who subsequently passed it on to the trader. On April 1, the trader visited his shop and informed his business partner about the notice. Overwhelmed by the continuous harassment, he made a drastic decision.
"Overwhelmed by the sustained harassment, I picked up a phenyl-like liquid from the shop and drank it," he stated in his police complaint. He was immediately rushed to Sola Civil Hospital, where he received medical treatment and was later discharged.
Legal Action Taken
Following his recovery, the trader filed a formal complaint with the Sarkhej police. The complaint includes charges of criminal intimidation, verbal abuse, and voluntarily causing hurt against the two accused individuals. The police are currently investigating the matter to gather further evidence and statements from all parties involved.
