Ahmedabad Woman Accuses Cousin of Stealing Gold Jewellery Worth Rs 8.10 Lakh
A 37-year-old insurance agent in Ahmedabad has filed a police complaint alleging that her cousin stole gold jewellery valued at approximately Rs 8.10 lakh from her residence in the Naranpura area. The incident, which has shocked the local community, reportedly occurred on February 8, 2024, during what was supposed to be a routine family visit.
Details of the Alleged Theft
According to the complainant, her cousin sister from Vasna visited her home on the day in question. Initially, the cousin requested a loan of Rs 70,000, offering two gold rings as collateral. The family examined the rings but found their value insufficient for the requested amount and returned them to her.
Later, the cousin allegedly asked to change her clothes before departing for a religious visit. She entered the mother's bedroom for this purpose and remained inside for an unusually long period. Upon exiting, she claimed her ride had arrived and left promptly.
Discovery of Missing Jewellery
It was only on Thursday, February 15, 2024, that the complainant's mother discovered the theft when she opened her cupboard. The missing items included:
- Two gold bangles weighing approximately 3 tolas, valued at Rs 4.8 lakh
- One gold mangalsutra weighing about 16 grams, worth Rs 2.50 lakh
- Two gold rings weighing around 5 grams, valued at Rs 80,000
The total estimated loss amounts to Rs 8.10 lakh. The complainant emphasized in her statement that no one else had visited the house after February 8, and there was no other possible entry point to the bedroom, strongly implicating her cousin.
Police Complaint and Cousin's Response
When confronted about the missing jewellery, the cousin reportedly denied any involvement in the theft. However, she expressed a willingness to compensate for the loss financially, which the complainant found suspicious given the circumstances.
The Naranpura police have registered a formal complaint for theft in a dwelling house under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Authorities are investigating the matter, gathering evidence and statements from both parties involved.
This case highlights the vulnerability of trust within family relationships and serves as a cautionary tale about security measures in residential settings. The police are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly to prevent such incidents.
