Ahmedabad Woman Files Police Complaint After Years of Alleged Abuse

A 28-year-old woman in Ahmedabad has come forward with harrowing allegations of sustained domestic violence, marital rape, and dowry harassment against her husband and in-laws, culminating in a formal police complaint filed on April 9 at the Mahila police station (Ahmedabad Rural). According to her statement, she endured nearly three years of physical assault, psychological torment, and severe restrictions on her basic freedoms within her marital home.

Education Mocked and Basic Freedoms Denied

The woman, who married in November 2021, claims the abuse began almost immediately after her wedding. Her Gujarati-medium education became a frequent target for ridicule and humiliation within the household. She alleges she was repeatedly told she was "not smart enough," unfavorably compared to other family members, and taunted over her perceived inability to manage household responsibilities.

Her freedom was severely curtailed in fundamental ways: she was restricted in what she could eat and where she could go. Even during a period when her father was seriously ill, she was allegedly forbidden from visiting her parents. On one occasion, when her parents came to see her, she claims she was locked inside a bathroom to prevent any contact.

Allegations of Physical Violence and Marital Rape

The complaint details disturbing accounts of physical violence. The woman alleges her husband would often return home intoxicated and physically assault her. Furthermore, she accuses him of forcing her into non-consensual sexual relations, constituting allegations of marital rape.

In a particularly distressing claim, she says she was compelled to undergo medical treatment under the pretext of suffering from depression, a move she describes as part of the controlling abuse.

Dowry Demands and Continued Harassment

The financial exploitation forms a core part of the allegations. The woman states that her in-laws and husband demanded a dowry of Rs 10 lakh. Her father reportedly paid the full amount in 2022. However, instead of ceasing, the harassment allegedly intensified.

Tensions reached a breaking point when the woman discovered her husband was in contact with another woman. She says this led to increased threats and abuse before she was ultimately forced out of the marital home. She also alleges that her in-laws have retained some of her personal jewellery.

Failed Mediation and Police Action

Attempts to resolve the situation through community intervention and counseling reportedly failed, with the accused parties refusing any form of settlement. The woman is now residing with her parents.

In response to her detailed complaint, the police have registered a formal case under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. An investigation into the serious allegations is currently underway as authorities seek to verify the claims and pursue appropriate legal action.
