A young woman in Ahmedabad has filed a serious police complaint against her husband and his family, accusing them of physical assault following a dispute over a signed cheque. The incident, which highlights the grim reality of domestic violence, occurred in the Narol area of the city.
Violent Altercation Over Bank Cheque
According to the First Information Report (FIR) lodged with the Narol police, the traumatic episode unfolded on the evening of November 29. The complainant, a 23-year-old woman, was at home with her 24-year-old husband around 9 pm. The couple, who have a six-year-old son together, got into an argument when the husband demanded that she sign a cheque so he could withdraw money from her bank account.
The woman explained that she would provide the signed cheque the following Monday, as banks remain closed over the weekend. This response, however, allegedly triggered a violent reaction from her spouse. The FIR states that the husband first began to verbally abuse her before escalating to physical violence, slapping her repeatedly.
Assault Intensifies, Neighbours Intervene
The situation worsened when her father-in-law and brother-in-law also became involved, scolding her over the cheque issue. Shockingly, the assault reportedly continued even after she eventually handed over the signed document under duress.
The FIR contains grave allegations: the woman's brother-in-law grabbed her by the throat, while her husband kicked her on the back. The commotion and her cries attracted the attention of neighbours, who gathered outside the home. It was only after this crowd formed that the assault finally stopped.
Aftermath and Police Action
Later that night, the woman's husband and brother-in-law dropped her off at her parental home in Vastral. The physical toll of the attack became evident the next night when she suffered from dizziness and severe body pain. Her brother then took her to a private hospital for necessary medical treatment.
Following her medical examination, the victim mustered the courage to approach the authorities. The Narol police have taken cognizance of the matter and registered a formal FIR. The case has been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) pertaining to assault and abetment. An investigation is now underway.
This distressing case from Ahmedabad underscores the urgent need for societal awareness and strict legal action against domestic abuse. It serves as a stark reminder that financial coercion and physical violence within households must be reported and addressed with the full force of the law.
