A 45-year-old woman sustained injuries after being allegedly assaulted with an iron pipe at her residence in Ahmedabad's Thakkarnagar area on Tuesday evening. The violent incident, stemming from a family dispute, also saw her sister being targeted when she tried to intervene.
Violent Altercation Over Family Matter
According to the First Information Report (FIR) lodged with the Krishnanagar police, the incident occurred around 5:30 PM on Tuesday. The complainant was at home with her two younger sisters. One of these sisters had been estranged from her husband for about a year.
The situation escalated when the accused, identified as the husband of the complainant's 17-year-old sister, arrived at the house. He was carrying an iron pipe and immediately began arguing with the older woman. He questioned her about why his estranged wife was present at the house.
Brutal Attack with a Weapon
When the 45-year-old woman asked him not to create a scene, the man allegedly turned aggressive. As per the police complaint, he then struck the complainant multiple times with the iron pipe. The blows landed on her back and right thigh.
In a desperate attempt to defend herself, the woman tried to grab the pipe. This act resulted in her sustaining injuries to her hands. Seeing the assault, her other sister stepped in to shield her. However, the assailant then allegedly turned on this sister and assaulted her as well.
Assailant Flees After Causing Damage
The commotion alerted neighbours, who began rushing towards the house. Seizing the opportunity, the accused fled the scene. Before leaving, in an act of further aggression, he smashed the television set in the living room using the same iron pipe.
The injured complainant was promptly taken to the trauma ward of the Civil Hospital for medical attention. After receiving necessary treatment, she was discharged. Police confirmed her condition is now stable.
Legal Action Under New Law
The Krishnanagar police have registered a formal case based on the complaint. Significantly, the FIR has been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the new penal code that replaced the Indian Penal Code. The charges invoked relate to assault, causing hurt by using dangerous weapons, and criminal mischief.
Investigations are currently underway to locate and apprehend the accused. The police are gathering further statements from the victims, witnesses, and neighbours to build a strong case.
