Ahmedabad Woman Staged Abduction with Former Accused

Ahmedabad: A week after a 20-year-old woman was believed to have been abducted by the man previously convicted for kidnapping and raping her in 2020, investigations have revealed that the recent disappearance was a planned elopement between the two.

Background of the Case

The woman, a resident of the Sabarmati area, had been allegedly abducted by Ghevar Singh Gurjar in 2020 when she was 14 and he was 20. Gurjar was charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and sections related to rape and abduction. He was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment in 2023, as confirmed by Vani Dudhat, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of L Division.

Marriage and Divorce

The victim married around two years ago upon turning 18. However, she reportedly faced taunts from her in-laws regarding her 2020 ordeal, which led to a divorce. About a year ago, she remarried and began living with her husband in the Sabarmati area.

Parole and Plan

Gurjar’s situation changed when he was granted parole in 2024 to attend to his ailing father, but he jumped parole. Police investigations determined that the woman recently contacted Gurjar while visiting her parental home in Rajasthan. She expressed her desire to leave her husband’s home due to constant harassment.

The pair orchestrated an elopement from her in-laws’ residence in the last week of May. Gurjar arrived with three associates, and the woman offered no resistance. The group traveled to Maharashtra, staying there for some time before returning to Gujarat, where they were detained by Surat police.

Current Status

According to ACP Dudhat, the woman did not allege any misconduct by Gurjar or the others. She made it clear that she did not wish to return to her parents’ or in-laws’ homes. Consequently, she was sent to a women’s protection home, while Gurjar has been remanded to judicial custody.
