Mass Suspension of Bokaro Police Personnel Over Mishandled Missing Girl Investigation

In an unprecedented disciplinary action, the entire staff of twenty-eight personnel from a police station in Bokaro district, Jharkhand, has been suspended on charges of gross negligence and lax investigation. The suspension order was issued on Sunday following the recovery of skeletal remains belonging to an eighteen-year-old girl who had been missing since July of last year.

Breakthrough After High Court Intervention

The case saw a significant breakthrough on Saturday with the arrest of twenty-six-year-old Dinesh Kumar Mahto, the victim's former boyfriend, who has been charged with murder. Police officials stated that Mahto confessed to killing Pushpa Mahto near Chas college after she allegedly pressured him for marriage. The two had been in a relationship for nearly three years prior to the incident.

The suspended officers include the officer in-charge of Pindrajora police station, Abhishek Ranjan, investigating officer Aniket Kumar, and twenty-six other personnel comprising sub-inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors, and constables. This drastic action came after the Jharkhand High Court sharply criticized the Director General of Police and Bokaro police authorities for their unsatisfactory handling of the investigation.

Timeline of Police Failures Revealed

Bokaro Superintendent of Police Harvinder Singh, who himself faced reprimand from the High Court on Friday, disclosed conflicting accounts regarding the case registration. While police records indicate the case was reported on July 24, 2025, Singh acknowledged it was only formally registered on August 4. However, the victim's mother, Rekha Devi, had previously claimed that she approached Pindrajora police station on July 21 when her daughter first went missing but received no assistance.

"Not one, but all the cops at the thana failed to do their duty," stated SP Harvinder Singh. "In our internal probe so far, we have learned that the accused was shielded after police personnel accepted bribes in both cash and kind for socializing and partying purposes."

Mother's Persistent Fight for Justice

The investigation gained serious momentum only in February of this year after Rekha Devi filed a habeas corpus petition in the High Court. She maintained that despite multiple appeals to local police and providing circumstantial evidence about her daughter's possible whereabouts, no substantive action was taken initially.

Following successive High Court hearings that continued until April 7, coordinated efforts by a Special Investigation Team and a separate one-member committee headed by DIG Sandhaya Rani Mehta ultimately led to the arrest of the accused on Saturday.

After performing her daughter's final rites, Rekha Devi declared that her fight for justice remains far from over. Hailing from a family of daily wage laborers, she demanded capital punishment not only for the accused but also for the now-suspended officer in-charge for failing her family.

"They kept playing with our case like a football," Rekha Devi expressed emotionally. "My daughter would likely be alive today if they had shown some seriousness from the beginning. If this had involved any influential person, the entire police machinery would have worked overnight. Right from the start, the 'bada babu' (officer in-charge) and his men attempted to discourage and intimidate us through various means to stop pursuing the case because they had been bribed by the accused."

Systemic Failures and Accountability

The case highlights significant systemic failures within local law enforcement mechanisms. The internal police probe revealed serious lapses and alleged misconduct that extended beyond mere negligence to active obstruction of justice. The mass suspension represents one of the most comprehensive disciplinary actions taken against an entire police station unit in recent memory, signaling administrative determination to address corruption and incompetence.

As the judicial process continues, questions remain about oversight mechanisms and accountability protocols within police departments. The victim's family continues to seek comprehensive justice that addresses both the criminal act and the institutional failures that may have contributed to the tragedy.
