Violent Clashes Over Ambedkar Statue Installation Lead to 19 Arrests in Lakhimpur Kheri
In a disturbing incident that unfolded on Ambedkar Jayanti, at least 19 individuals have been arrested following violent clashes in Lakhimpur Kheri district, Uttar Pradesh. The conflict erupted over the installation of a statue dedicated to B R Ambedkar, sparking chaos and destruction in the region.
Incident Details and Police Response
The violent altercation occurred in Motipur village, located within the Bankeganj area, on Monday. According to police reports, the clashes were triggered when one group allegedly installed the Ambedkar statue on vacant land without obtaining the necessary permissions. This unauthorized act led to a confrontation between two factions from the same community, escalating quickly into violence.
Police authorities have registered two separate cases in connection with the incident. An officer involved in the investigation provided a detailed account, stating, "The statue was severely damaged after the two groups clashed with each other. In the aftermath, one group engaged in widespread vandalism and arson, targeting government vehicles and property."
Extent of Damage and Security Measures
The violence resulted in significant property damage, with at least nine vehicles being targeted. Among the affected vehicles were those belonging to government officers, including a naib tehsildar and circle officers. Reports indicate that these vehicles were set ablaze or damaged using stones and sticks during the unrest.
The situation remained highly tense for nearly five hours before security forces managed to bring it under control. Additional Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Rai commented on the police action, noting, "We have booked eight named accused, including the village head or gram pradhan, along with approximately 200 unidentified individuals. This action is based on video evidence and a formal complaint filed by Chanda Devi."
Complaint and Allegations
In her written complaint, Chanda Devi described a harrowing experience, alleging severe physical assault. She stated, "I only opposed the installation because it was being carried out without proper approval. In response, the attackers chased me, beat me brutally, tore my clothes, and even poured petrol on me in an attempt to burn me alive. I lost consciousness during the attack." Her account highlights the intense and personal nature of the violence that erupted during the clashes.
