Amit Shah to Inaugurate Odisha Police Exhibition Showcasing New Criminal Laws Implementation

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to inaugurate a significant exhibition in Bhubaneswar on Friday, highlighting the achievements of the Odisha state police in implementing three landmark criminal laws. These laws are the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).

Replacing Colonial-Era Legal Frameworks

These new laws, which officially came into force on July 1, 2024, have replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act (IEA). This marks a pivotal shift in India's legal system, moving away from outdated frameworks to more modern and justice-oriented approaches.

Focus on Technology and Justice

Director General of Police Y B Khurania emphasized that the exhibition will showcase how these reforms promote scientific and technology-driven investigations. The goal is to ensure watertight cases that minimize opportunities for offenders to exploit legal loopholes. Khurania stated, "These reforms mark a decisive shift from a colonial punitive system to a justice-oriented one. They prioritize victims' rights and dignity, mandate timely investigations and trials, and embed the principle that justice delayed is justice denied into the legal structure."

Exhibition Details and Public Access

The exhibition will be open to the public from March 7 to March 10, aiming to make the modernized legal framework accessible and understandable to citizens. It features 10 interactive stalls designed to guide visitors through the entire judicial process, from crime scene investigation to court proceedings.

Key highlights of the exhibition include:

  • E-sakshya: A system for digital evidence management.
  • National Automated Fingerprint Identification System: Used for biometric verification.
  • Mobile Forensic Units: Deployed for on-site scientific investigations.
  • Mandatory Forensic Examinations: Required for serious crimes to enhance accuracy.

Emphasis on Swift and Fair Justice

The DGP highlighted that by leveraging forensic science, advanced technology, and encouraging citizen participation, the Odisha police are committed to delivering swift and fair justice. This approach is integral to the new laws' implementation, ensuring efficiency and transparency in legal processes.

Spotlight on Specialized Units

In addition to the technological aspects, the exhibition will spotlight the achievements of specialized police units. This includes the Special Operations Group and its critical role in anti-Maoist operations, demonstrating the broader impact of these legal reforms on public safety and security.

The exhibition serves as an educational platform, bridging the gap between law enforcement and the public, and reinforcing the state's dedication to a reformed justice system under the new criminal laws.
