The City police crime branch in Amravati has solved the murder of a young woman whose partially burnt body was discovered near Tapovan forest under Gadge Nagar police station limits on June 2. The accused, identified as Chetan Sunil Thorat, 23, a resident of Tejas Vihar, Rajura, is the victim's cousin. He allegedly confessed to killing Kajal Jitendra Ingale, 22, and setting her body ablaze with petrol to prevent identification.
Challenging Investigation
The case posed significant challenges as the body was found in a remote, densely vegetated area with no CCTV coverage and no identification documents. Police Commissioner Rakesh Ola and senior Deputy Commissioners of Police visited the spot after the police control room was alerted.
The crime branch formed four special teams under senior officers to identify the victim. They scanned missing person reports from across Amravati district and scrutinized over 300 CCTV recordings. Through technical analysis and intelligence inputs, the deceased was identified as Kajal Ingale, a native of Vishroli village in Chandur Bazar tehsil who lived in Tejas Vihar, Rajura.
Arrest and Confession
Leads pointed to her cousin, Chetan. During interrogation, he allegedly admitted to the murder. He also disposed of Kajal's mobile phone and other belongings. Police are now working to recover those items.
Investigators said the exact motive remains unclear. A case of murder was registered at Gadge Nagar police station. The breakthrough came under the guidance of Police Commissioner Rakesh Ola, DCP Shyam Ghuge, DCP (Headquarters and Crime) Ramesh Dhumal, and ACP Shivaji Bachate.
Teams led by crime branch Unit-1 in-charge Dinesh Dahatonde and unit-2 in-charge Atul Var, along with their staff, solved the case.
