Amritsar Police Thwarts Major Terror Plot with Swift Border Arrest
In a significant security operation, the Amritsar (rural) police have successfully averted a potential terror attack by apprehending a youth in possession of an improvised explosive device (IED) near the sensitive Indo-Pakistan international border. The timely intervention has prevented what authorities describe as a meticulously planned scheme to destabilize peace across Punjab.
Dramatic Interception During Routine Checkpoint Operation
Senior Superintendent of Police (Amritsar Rural) Suhail Qasim Mir provided detailed insights into the operation. The suspect, identified as Harman Singh from Kumarpura village in Ajnala, was stopped during standard security checks along the Muhail-Bukhari–Panj Goraya roadway. Upon being signaled to halt, Harman allegedly attempted to escape but was quickly subdued by the alert police team.
During a subsequent search, officers discovered a suspicious polythene-wrapped package within the bag he was carrying. The accused reportedly confessed to police that the package contained an explosive device, prompting immediate escalation of the situation.
Bomb Disposal Squad Confirms and Neutralizes Threat
The bomb disposal squad was urgently summoned to the location. Their examination confirmed the presence of an IED cleverly concealed inside an ordinary tiffin box. The specialized team worked meticulously to safely defuse the explosive, eliminating any immediate danger to the surrounding area.
SSP Mir disclosed that the total weight of the IED, including its tiffin box casing, measured 534 grams. Additionally, authorities recovered a PTD switch and a 9-volt battery from the accused's belongings, components essential for activating the explosive device.
Pakistani Drone Delivery and ISI Suspicions Emerge
During preliminary interrogation, Harman Singh allegedly revealed critical information about the device's origins. He claimed the explosive had been delivered via a Pakistani drone near the border area, which he then retrieved with instructions to transport it to another contact within the network.
Police officials expressed strong suspicions regarding the involvement of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in orchestrating this module. The apparent objective was to spread terror and inflict substantial damage within Punjab, exploiting the region's proximity to the international boundary.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
A formal case has been registered under Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act at the Ajnala police station. Law enforcement agencies are now intensifying their investigative efforts to identify, track, and apprehend additional members connected to this terror network. The operation underscores the continuous vigilance required along border regions to counter transnational security threats.
