Amritsar Police Cracks Down on Cross-Border Smuggling Networks
In a significant breakthrough, the Amritsar city police announced on Sunday that they have successfully dismantled two major cross-border smuggling modules involved in the illegal trafficking of arms and narcotics. Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar revealed that six individuals have been apprehended in connection with these operations, leading to the recovery of six sophisticated pistols and a substantial 3.5 kilograms of heroin.
Details of the Arrests and Seizures
The arrested suspects have been identified as Karan Singh (26), Gurpreet Singh (22), Rakesh (26), and Chamkor Singh (23), all residents of Khemkaran in Tarn Taran district, along with Makhandeen (22) and Jasbir Singh (19) from Amritsar. During the operation, law enforcement officials confiscated a cache of advanced weaponry, including three PX 5.7×28 mm Tisas pistols manufactured in Turkey, two .30 bore pistols, and one 9 mm pistol, accompanied by 60 live cartridges.
Advanced Weaponry and Cross-Border Links
Commissioner Bhullar emphasized that the PX 5.7×28 mm Tisas series pistols are among the latest and most sophisticated firearms available, making their recovery a rare and notable achievement for the police force. Preliminary investigations have uncovered alarming connections between the arrested individuals and Pakistan-based smugglers. These operatives are believed to have utilized drones to supply arms and narcotics near the sensitive Indo-Pak border region.
According to the police commissioner, the accused were operating under the direct guidance of a cross-border handler, highlighting the organized nature of these smuggling activities. This revelation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Indian authorities in combating transnational crime networks that exploit technological advancements like drones for illicit purposes.
Implications and Ongoing Efforts
The bust marks a critical step in disrupting the flow of illegal weapons and drugs into the region, which pose significant threats to public safety and national security. The Amritsar police have intensified their surveillance and investigative efforts along the border areas to prevent such smuggling attempts in the future. This operation serves as a stark reminder of the persistent efforts required to safeguard the nation's borders from external threats and internal criminal elements.
