Amritsar Police Dismantle Narcotics Network with Major Heroin Seizure

In a significant crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking, the Counter Intelligence (CI) wing in Amritsar has successfully busted a narcotics smuggling module, leading to the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of 5 kilograms of heroin. This operation deals a substantial blow to illicit networks operating in the sensitive border region of Punjab.

Details of the Arrest and Seizure

The accused have been identified as Maninder Singh from Khatrai Khurd and Gurjant Singh from Phirwaria, both residents of Amritsar district. During the operation, police also impounded a Hyundai i20 car with registration number PB10GH0140, which was allegedly being used to transport the contraband. The vehicle has been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.

Suspected International Connections

According to Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused were in contact with a Pakistan-based smuggler and a foreign-based handler. The duo was reportedly acting on directions from these international contacts to receive and distribute narcotics consignments within the region. This highlights the transnational nature of the drug trade affecting the area.

Operation Execution and Recovery

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, CI teams set up a checkpoint near Dhariwal village in the Ajnala subdivision. They intercepted the suspects who were allegedly on their way to deliver the heroin to another party. A thorough search of their vehicle led to the recovery of 5 kg of heroin, leading to their immediate arrest on the spot.

Legal Actions and Future Investigations

A case has been registered under Sections 21, 25, and 29 of the NDPS Act at the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) in Amritsar. Police officials have stated that the probe is now focused on establishing both backward and forward linkages of the network. This includes identifying suppliers, handlers, and intended recipients, with more arrests and recoveries anticipated as the investigation progresses.

The seizure underscores the ongoing efforts by Punjab police to combat drug trafficking, particularly in border areas where such activities pose significant challenges to law enforcement and public safety.
