Man Arrested After Viral Video Shows Assault on Muslim Men in Badaun

In a disturbing incident that has sparked widespread outrage, a 24-year-old man was arrested in Meerut after a video purportedly showing three Muslim men being assaulted in Ruadayan town of Badaun district went viral on social media. The video, which circulated widely, depicts an alleged attack that occurred during the holy month of Ramzan, raising concerns about religious targeting and community safety.

Details of the Assault Incident

The victims, identified as Abdul Salam (60), Mohd Arif (35), and Javed Khan (55), all residents of Mohiddinpur under the Sahsawan Kotwali area, were reportedly approaching the locality to collect zakat (charity) for a madrasa. According to police reports, the trio was enquiring about the Muslim neighbourhood and seeking directions to the highway when the incident unfolded on February 16.

Police stated that the accused, Akshay Kumar, who was riding a scooter, stopped the men and demanded their names. He allegedly removed Javed Khan's cap and proceeded to slap the men repeatedly. The assault escalated as Kumar chased them for nearly 500 metres while hurling abuses and questioning them aggressively. Salam recounted that when they explained their purpose of collecting donations, Kumar began abusing and assaulting them.

Delayed Reporting and Social Media Fallout

Salam revealed that the victims did not report the matter to police immediately due to fear of social stigma and advised each other to remain silent. However, two days later, a video of the assault was circulated on social media platforms, accompanied by a song containing provocative slogans. This viral spread prompted the victims to approach the authorities. Salam emphasized that the area is home to approximately 700 Muslim families and called for strict action, stressing that no one should be targeted based on appearance or religious identity.

Police Response and Legal Action

Superintendent of Police Brijesh Kumar Singh confirmed that an FIR was registered under Sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(3), and 352 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused, Akshay Kumar, was subsequently arrested, and further investigation is currently underway. The police have assured that the case is being handled with seriousness to ensure justice.

Political Reactions and Broader Implications

The incident has drawn political attention, with the Uttar Pradesh Congress posting the video on X (formerly Twitter) and criticizing the government. They alleged that such attacks on minorities have increased in recent years, highlighting ongoing tensions. This case underscores broader issues of communal harmony and law enforcement in the region, prompting calls for enhanced vigilance and protection for vulnerable communities.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are urged to address the root causes of such incidents and implement measures to prevent future occurrences. The viral nature of the video has amplified public scrutiny, making it a focal point for discussions on religious tolerance and social justice in contemporary India.
