Asaram withdraws bail extension plea in rape case

Ahmedabad: Ashumal Harpalani alias Asaram on Friday withdrew his application seeking extension of temporary bail granted to him till June 15 in connection with the rape case in which he was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Gandhinagar court.

The division bench of Justice Gita Gopi and Justice L S Pirzada disposed of Asaram’s application after his lawyer requested the HC to allow him to withdraw the application. He was granted temporary bail last year by the Gujarat HC after the Rajasthan HC granted him temporary bail following an order by the Supreme Court allowing the 84-year-old to get out of jail on medical grounds.

Asaram’s interim bail was extended from time to time, and the Rajasthan HC last extended his bail until July 7, but it confirmed his 2018 conviction in a Pocso case and confirmed his life term. He was required to surrender to prison.
