Khargone Lokayukta Police Apprehend ASI in Bribery Sting Operation
In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Lokayukta police in Khargone district executed a meticulously planned operation on Friday, resulting in the arrest of an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) posted at the Kasrawad police station. The officer was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 7,000 from a local farmer, highlighting ongoing issues of misconduct within law enforcement agencies.
Complaint Details and Initial Investigation
The case originated from a formal complaint lodged by Shyamlal Upadhyay, a 69-year-old farmer residing in Chandawad village within Bhagwanpura tehsil. Upadhyay alleged that the ASI had been demanding a sum of Rs 20,000 to settle a complaint filed against him by Rajesh Bagadre, a resident of Kasrawad. Following standard procedures, the Lokayukta police conducted a thorough verification of the complaint, which was confirmed to be genuine and substantiated by evidence.
Rajesh Sahay, the Superintendent of Police for Lokayukta in Indore, provided detailed insights into the operation. He explained that upon validating the complaint, a specialized trap team was swiftly constituted to apprehend the accused. The team strategically laid a trap at the Kasrawad bus stand, a location chosen based on intelligence and operational feasibility.
The Sting Operation and Arrest
During the operation, the trap team successfully apprehended the ASI at the precise moment he was accepting Rs 7,000 from the complainant. This amount was part of a negotiated settlement, as the ASI had initially demanded Rs 20,000, claiming that a portion of the bribe was intended for the in-charge of Kasrawad police station. The deal was later reduced to Rs 10,000, with Rs 3,000 already paid as a first instalment on Thursday, prior to the sting operation.
In a statement to mediapersons, the complainant, Shyamlal Upadhyay, reiterated the ASI's demands and the alleged involvement of higher authorities. He expressed relief at the Lokayukta's intervention, stating that the bribery attempt had caused significant distress and financial burden.
Investigation into Broader Involvement
When questioned about the allegations implicating the Kasrawad police station in-charge, SP Rajesh Sahay clarified that no concrete evidence has been uncovered against him thus far. However, he emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and comprehensive. "If any involvement or complicity emerges during the course of our detailed probe, appropriate and stringent action will be taken without delay," Sahay assured, underscoring the commitment to rooting out corruption at all levels.
