Hisar: A police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) posted in Sirsa has been dismissed from service and arrested for allegedly siphoning off a portion of opium seized in a major drug trafficking case and supplying it to an acquaintance, officials said on Monday.
Details of the Drug Seizure
The accused, ASI Ranbir Singh, was investigating a case in which a joint team of Sirsa's Ding police station and Rajasthan Police seized 89kg opium from a truck near an NH-9 toll plaza on June 10. The truck driver, Kishna Ram, a resident of Rajasthan's Pali district, was arrested at the scene.
Police recovered 95 packets of opium concealed in specially fabricated compartments beneath the truck, along with Rs 40,000 in cash. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of the truck owner and the alleged supplier.
How the Misconduct Came to Light
The alleged misconduct came to light after Bhattu Kalan Police in Fatehabad arrested Shamsher Singh of Bangaon village with about 57 grams of opium on June 11. During questioning, he allegedly told police that the contraband had been supplied by ASI Ranbir Singh.
Following information shared by Fatehabad Police, Sirsa Police ordered an internal inquiry led by Additional Superintendent of Police Adarshdeep Singh. The probe reportedly found that the ASI had removed a portion of the seized opium and handed it to an acquaintance.
Action Taken
Police subsequently registered an FIR against Ranbir Singh, arrested him, and dismissed him from service with immediate effect.
ASP Adarshdeep Singh said the seized opium had been videographed through the e-evidence application and sealed as per procedure. "The investigation is underway to determine how the accused accessed the sealed contraband and the quantity allegedly removed. Strict action will be taken if the involvement of any other police personnel is found," he said.
