Assam Regiment Marks 85th Raising Day in Mizoram

Aizawl: The Assam Regiment celebrated its 85th Raising Day at the War Memorial at Treasury Square in Aizawl on Monday. This marked the first time the regiment held the occasion in Mizoram.

The day-long event saw participation from Mizoram Ex Servicemen League (MESL) president Lt Col Clement Lalhmingthanga, Brig Puspendar Sorayan, DIG, HQ 23 Sector Assam Rifles, along with former Assam Regiment soldiers, their families, ex-servicemen, and Assam Rifles personnel.

Addressing the gathering, Lt Col Lalhmingthanga highlighted the special place the Assam Regiment holds in the hearts of the Mizo people. Brig Sorayan extended greetings and urged current personnel to continue serving the nation, while also appealing to the public to remember the regiment's fallen heroes.

Historical Significance

The Assam Regiment was raised on June 15, 1941, in Shillong by Major (later Brigadier) Ross Cosens Howman OBE. It was established to meet the demand of the then undivided Assam for its own fighting unit and to counter the Japanese invasion threat during World War II.
