Assam River Death: Body Found, Two Police Suspended

The body of a 32-year-old man, who went missing after allegedly jumping into the Chiri river while fleeing from police, was recovered on Monday, triggering protests in Cachar's Lakhipur and leading to the suspension of two police personnel.

Muhit Kanu reportedly jumped into the river near Shaheed Nandachand Chiri Bridge on Sunday when police were dispersing an alleged gambling gathering. His body was fished out of the river several kilometers downstream from the spot where he was last seen.

Tension flared after police sent the body to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. Residents, alleging the police's responsibility for the incident, opposed the move and took the body to Lakhipur, demanding strict action against the personnel involved and compensation for the bereaved family.
