Tragic Balasore Accident Claims Infant's Life, Leaves Family Critically Injured
In a devastating incident on Friday, an 18-month-old girl lost her life and four members of her family sustained critical injuries after a speeding SUV violently rammed into the auto-rickshaw they were traveling in. The collision occurred near Khantapada on National Highway-16 in Balasore district, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Victims Identified and Circumstances of the Crash
The deceased has been identified as Shruti Mahalik, a resident of Basubarhampur village in Balasore district. The injured include her 30-year-old mother Ashrita, three other women who are relatives of the deceased, and the auto-rickshaw driver, who is unrelated to the family. All victims hail from the same village, highlighting the close-knit nature of the tragedy.
Sources indicate that the passengers were returning to their village from Soro after completing work at a finance company when the accident unfolded. The SUV, allegedly being driven at an excessively high speed, crashed into the auto-rickshaw with tremendous force. The impact was so severe that the auto-rickshaw was mangled beyond recognition, leaving all six occupants with grievous injuries.
Immediate Aftermath and Rescue Efforts
Locals swiftly rushed to the scene upon hearing the crash and bravely rescued the injured from the wreckage. They were initially transported to Khantapada hospital for emergency treatment. Tragically, despite medical efforts, Shruti succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
As the condition of the remaining five victims was stated to be critical, they were urgently shifted to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Balasore for advanced care. The community's quick response likely prevented further fatalities, but the severity of the injuries remains a grave concern.
Driver Apprehended and Police Action
In a disturbing turn of events, locals alleged that the driver of the SUV attempted to flee the scene immediately after the collision. However, vigilant residents managed to catch him before he could escape and promptly informed the police.
On receiving the information, Khantapada police arrived at the spot and seized both vehicles involved in the accident. Anurag Mohanty, the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Khantapada police station, confirmed that the SUV driver has been arrested and a formal case has been registered in connection with the incident. The police are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause and any potential negligence.
This heartbreaking accident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of road safety measures on highways, particularly in areas like National Highway-16 where high-speed driving poses significant risks.
