Bangladeshi Woman Escapes Mumbai Police Custody, Husband Accused of Aiding Escape
A 36-year-old Bangladeshi woman, who was in police custody pending deportation proceedings, managed to escape from the premises of Kurla Police Station in Mumbai during the early hours of Wednesday. This incident has triggered an internal investigation and a widespread manhunt by law enforcement agencies.
Details of the Escape Incident
According to police reports, the escape occurred at approximately 4:10 AM on Thursday. At the time, a constable and another woman officer were assigned night duty to guard eight Bangladeshi nationals, including five women and three children. These individuals were housed in vacant police quarters within the Kurla Police Colony.
The woman, identified as Mirjan Begum, also known as Nasreen Ismail Sheikh, reportedly sought permission to use the bathroom. However, when the officers checked on her after some time, she was found missing. Senior officers were immediately notified, leading to an examination of CCTV footage from the vicinity.
CCTV Footage and Suspected Accomplice
The CCTV footage revealed that Mirjan Begum exited the police compound near Chikne Chowk at 4:17 AM. She was later seen walking with her husband, Manish Baldev Rajbhar, also known as Ismail Sheikh, near Bhabha Hospital. This indicates that her husband likely assisted in her escape from police custody.
Police officials suspect that Mirjan Begum fled custody to evade deportation. Originally from the Narail district in the Khulna division of Bangladesh, she was residing in the Mira-Bhayander area of Mumbai at the time of the incident.
Police Response and Legal Actions
The Kurla police have registered an offence against her husband for aiding the escape. Both the Kurla police and the city crime branch are actively working to trace the absconding woman. An internal inquiry has also been initiated to examine possible lapses in police custody procedures that may have facilitated the escape.
This incident highlights concerns over security protocols in police stations, especially when dealing with individuals facing deportation. Authorities are intensifying efforts to locate Mirjan Begum and ensure that such breaches do not recur in the future.
