A 19-year-old Bangladeshi national, who allegedly entered Assam without detection two days ago in search of employment, surrendered before the district and sessions court in Sribhumi on Monday. The youth, identified as Dwin Islam Sheikh from the Bagerhat district of Bangladesh, approached the court seeking legal assistance and appealed to be repatriated to his home country.
Court Proceedings and Claims
According to court sources, Dwin claimed that he was enticed to India by a Bangladeshi agent known only as “Rabbi,” who promised him a lucrative job. He alleged that the agent illegally brought him across the border before abandoning him at Guwahati railway station. Unable to contact anyone, the youth reportedly boarded a train to Silchar and reached the Sribhumi district court, where he sought legal aid.
Legal Aid and Police Involvement
DLSA legal aid defence counsel Tutiur Rahman Patikar stated that officials were taken aback when the youth approached the court for assistance. “I uploaded a post on social media requesting anyone who may know his address or family members to contact us. Under Indian law, every individual, whether a citizen or not, is entitled to basic human rights and legal protection. Certain documents are essential for his legal defence. However, repeated attempts to contact the Bangladesh phone number he provided were unsuccessful,” Patikar said.
He added that the youth had been handed over to Sribhumi police and would be provided legal assistance during the course of the investigation. The matter highlights the vulnerabilities of individuals crossing borders illegally and the legal safeguards available to them under Indian law.
