Bar Brawl Fatal: Sri Lankan Tamil Woman Killed in Chennai

A violent altercation that began inside a bar in Chennai escalated into a fatal road incident late Saturday night, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil woman and critical injuries to her 17-year-old female companion. The incident occurred near Thirumangalam when a group of youths deliberately crashed their car into the victims' two-wheeler.

Sequence of Events

According to police, the deceased, identified as Yancy, along with five female friends, visited a star hotel in Koyambedu on Saturday night. The group rode three two-wheelers to the venue, where they consumed alcohol and danced at the pub. A group of young men who arrived in a car joined their celebrations. However, an argument soon broke out between the two groups, escalating into a physical confrontation. Security personnel intervened and escorted both parties out of the premises.

The dispute continued outside the hotel, where both sides engaged in heated arguments and further assaults. Bouncers again dispersed the groups before the bar closed for the night.

Fatal Chase

As Yancy and her friends rode towards Thirumangalam on their two-wheelers, the rival group followed them in a car. During the chase, Yancy reportedly threw a stone at the car, causing damage. In retaliation, the car occupants accelerated and rammed the two-wheeler, throwing Yancy and the 17-year-old girl off the vehicle. Yancy suffered severe head injuries and died at the scene, while her friend was admitted to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

The suspects fled immediately after the incident. However, based on CCTV footage and vehicle registration details, police arrested four individuals: Balaguru, Suman, Sakthivel, and another accomplice. The car used in the crime has been seized.

Victim's Background

Yancy was a resident of the Sri Lankan Tamil Rehabilitation Camp at Ariyankuppam in Villupuram. She had completed Class XII last year and had recently come to Chennai to visit her 17-year-old friend, whom she had met online.

Yancy's mother, Mary Stella, expressed her grief, stating that her daughter last spoke to her around 7:50 pm on Saturday, informing her that she and her friend were going out. Mary ended the call with a promise to speak again in the morning. Hours later, she received a call from police informing her of Yancy's death. “My daughter wanted to study fashion designing and go abroad. Now she is gone. I want justice for my daughter,” Mary said.

Investigation Ongoing

Police are probing the sequence of events inside the bar that triggered the clash. Efforts are on to trace Yancy's other friends who were present during the incident. Following the incident, authorities have sealed the bar.
