Key Accused Neutralized in Encounter
The prime suspect in the Baruipur rape and murder case was shot dead in a police encounter on Tuesday, according to West Bengal Police. The accused, identified as 32-year-old Ramesh Mondal, allegedly snatched a service revolver from a police constable and opened fire at the pursuing team before being fatally shot in retaliation.
Details of the Incident
The encounter took place around 3:30 AM on the outskirts of Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district. Mondal was being transported for a crime scene reconstruction when he managed to free one hand from handcuffs, grabbed the constable's weapon, and fired two rounds, injuring one officer in the shoulder. The police team returned fire, killing Mondal on the spot. Senior Superintendent of Police Tanmoy Roy confirmed, "The accused was killed in a lawful encounter after he attacked our personnel and posed a grave threat to public safety."
Background of the Case
Mondal was arrested on July 5 in connection with the rape and murder of a 19-year-old college student whose body was found in a paddy field near Baruipur on June 28. Forensic reports confirmed sexual assault and strangulation. Mondal had a prior criminal record, including charges of robbery and attempted murder. The victim's family had demanded swift justice, and the police had faced criticism for delays in the investigation.
Impact and Reactions
The encounter has drawn mixed reactions. Local residents expressed relief, with some gathering near the police station to applaud the action. However, human rights activists questioned the circumstances, calling for an independent inquiry. State Law Minister Moloy Ghatak stated, "The police acted in self-defense and to prevent the accused from escaping. The law has taken its course." The injured constable is reported to be in stable condition at a Kolkata hospital.
According to police records, Mondal was involved in at least four other criminal cases, including a 2023 armed robbery. The encounter has sparked a debate on extrajudicial killings, but the police maintain that all protocols were followed. The investigation into the rape-murder case will continue, with authorities focusing on gathering additional evidence against any other suspects.
