The mother of the prime accused in the Baruipur rape and murder case has refused to claim his body after he was killed in a police encounter, stating, "I don't want to see his face."
Accused Killed in Police Encounter
The accused, identified as a 30-year-old man, was shot dead by police on Tuesday in an encounter near the Baruipur area of South 24 Parganas district. He was the prime suspect in the brutal rape and murder of a 22-year-old woman, whose body was found in a field on June 28.
According to police officials, the accused was being taken to the crime scene for reconstruction when he snatched a constable's weapon and opened fire. In the ensuing exchange, he was killed.
Mother's Shocking Reaction
When asked to claim the body, the mother, a daily wage laborer, refused outright. In a statement to reporters, she said, "I don't want to see his face. He brought shame to our family. Let the police do whatever they want with the body." She added that she had not spoken to her son for months and had no idea about his activities.
The mother's refusal has highlighted the community's outrage over the crime. Local residents have also condemned the accused, with many praising the police action.
Case Details and Investigation
The victim, a college student, was raped and murdered on June 27 while returning home from work. Her body was discovered the next day with multiple injuries. The case sparked widespread protests in Baruipur, with demands for swift justice.
Police had arrested the accused on July 2 after analyzing CCTV footage and mobile phone records. He was a history-sheeter with prior cases of theft and assault. The investigation revealed that he had stalked the victim for weeks before the attack.
"The encounter was a result of the accused's attempt to flee," said a senior police officer. "Our team acted in self-defense. We have recovered the weapon used in the crime."
The victim's family has expressed satisfaction with the police action. Her father said, "We are relieved that he is no more. Our daughter has got justice."
The police have filed a report on the encounter and are awaiting further orders from the court. The body of the accused has been sent for post-mortem and will be disposed of according to protocol if no family member claims it.
