A house help from West Bengal was rescued from a flat in Gurugram, where she was allegedly forced to work for more than 16 hours daily and subjected to physical abuse, police said on Saturday.
Details of the Rescue
The victim, a woman in her early 20s, was brought from West Bengal to Gurugram about three months ago with the promise of a job. However, she was confined to a flat in Sector 56 and made to work long hours without adequate rest or food, according to a police officer.
“She was allegedly forced to work for more than 16 hours daily and physically abused. She was not allowed to step out of the house or contact her family,” the officer told PTI.
How the Rescue Happened
The rescue operation was carried out on Friday after the victim managed to send a distress message to her family in West Bengal. Her family alerted the police, who raided the flat and freed her. The accused, identified as the flat owner and his wife, have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act.
“We have registered a case against the couple for wrongful confinement, assault, and forced labour. Further investigation is underway,” the officer added.
Victim's Condition
The woman was found in a weak and traumatized state. She has been sent for medical examination and is currently under the care of a shelter home. Her family has been informed and is expected to take her back to West Bengal soon.
This incident highlights the plight of domestic workers who are often exploited and abused in unregulated households. Authorities urge victims or witnesses to report such cases to the helpline numbers.
