Birthday Celebration in Bengaluru Turns Into Nightmare as Armed Gang Strikes
A joyous birthday gathering at a residential flat in east Bengaluru descended into chaos and terror when a gang of seven armed intruders forced their way inside, robbing the occupants of substantial cash, gold jewelry, and digital funds. The incident, which unfolded in the Margondanahalli area, has sent shockwaves through the local community and highlighted growing concerns about urban crime.
Detailed Account of the Terrifying Ordeal
The horrifying episode occurred on the evening of January 1, between approximately 7:00 PM and 11:30 PM, at a multi-storey building located on III Cross, La Mansion Layout in Margondanahalli. According to police reports and victim statements, the celebration was organized by Sathish Kumar, a 34-year-old cab driver residing on the ground floor of the building.
Sathish had invited a group of close friends to mark the birthday of his companion Venkatesh. The gathering included eight attendees: Venkatesh, Madhu, Pavan, Manoj, Raghavendra, Ravi, Manjunath, and Anantha. What began as a festive occasion quickly transformed into a scene of violence and intimidation.
Methodical Invasion and Systematic Looting
While the birthday festivities were underway, two attendees—Manoj and Raghavendra—briefly left the premises to collect food from a nearby hotel. Shortly after their departure, there was an unexpected knock at the door. When Sathish opened it, he was confronted by seven men brandishing dangerous weapons including machetes and wooden sticks.
The assailants immediately forced their way into the flat, threatening all present with severe consequences if they raised any alarm. The gang members subjected the victims to verbal abuse and issued dire warnings, creating an atmosphere of intense fear and helplessness.
Initial Demands and Physical AssaultThe criminals first confiscated all mobile phones from the birthday party attendees. They then demanded immediate surrender of cash and valuable possessions. When some victims showed hesitation, the attackers brandished their weapons more aggressively, compelling compliance through sheer intimidation.
The situation escalated further when the gang demanded access to digital financial resources. They insisted on obtaining passwords for mobile devices and Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) accounts. One victim, Ravi, initially provided an incorrect PIN, claiming he had forgotten the correct sequence. This provoked the assailants, who responded by assaulting him with the blunt side of a machete until he revealed the accurate PIN.
Digital Financial Theft and Additional Losses
Armed with the coerced PINs, the criminals proceeded to transfer Rs 79,000 from Pavan's account using various digital payment applications. This represents one of the more modern aspects of the crime, demonstrating how technological financial systems can be exploited through physical intimidation.
Meanwhile, Manoj and Raghavendra returned from their food errand and knocked on the door. The assailants opened it, confronted the returning pair, and immediately seized their mobile phones as well. The gang then conducted a thorough search of the residence, allegedly making off with additional valuables including a 30-gram gold bracelet and a wristwatch discovered in a cupboard.
Escape and Aftermath
The armed intruders finally departed the premises around 11:50 PM, but not before implementing a final measure to delay pursuit. They placed all the confiscated mobile phones outside the door and latched it from the exterior, effectively trapping the victims inside their own home.
The traumatized friends eventually managed to attract the attention of neighbors, who helped open the externally latched door. Following their release, the victims immediately reported the incident to local authorities, who have registered a formal case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
